Just heard from my BSG source:
Season 4 is a go, with 13 episodes (for now, as actors' contracts had to be picked up shortly) to air in January. This includes a 2-hour TV movie- to air before Season 4- in September!

S4 is awsome, but are we going to be dragging from March, 2007 until Janauary 2008 with no BSG?

Well, still having S4 at all is great.

KR,

Thanks for the great news.

I favor the 2-hour TV movie. It should have a lot more budget than two or even three regular episodes combine, which means more can be done and less will be left on the editing room.

I wonder if the budget for 13 episodes + a 2-hour movie = 20 episodes? If that's the case, I wouldn't mind. Quality is better than quantity in this case.

My understanding is the 2-hour movie will air in fall before Season 4 gets underway. It sounds like the DVD movie.

I have the same question as bugmenot - just 13? Is this perhaps going to be a split season like a previous one, in which there are 13 in one calendar year, then more in '08? While I don't love a long hiatus, at least it gives the show's creators that much more time to be on point with quality stories, getting top-notch guest stars and great VFX - something the original show NEVER could consistently deliver because ABC rushed every episode.

I agree. Quality before anything else. If we have a gap between early spring 2006 and January 2008 I'll be hatin' life; but I would prefer they get the show right than to rush things.

Well, it's only my opinion, but I thought that the first season of the show was the best so far, and that was the product of a year's hiatus after the miniseries, and was only 13 episodes long. So the precedent makes me optimistic!

If this is true, the pessismist in me sees bad things.

15 episodes (13 and a 2 hour movie) A move back to Janurary.
Scifi obviously did not get the ratings they were hoping for in the fall. I doubt (but would love to be wrong) that they are getting a 20 episode budget into 15 episodes.

This could lead to this being the last season if bigger numbers aren't pulled next year. That long wait could be fatal.

Please prove me wrong scifi channel.

But why only 13 Episodes???? I hope they expand it back to twenty.

Btw, KR, has your source confirmed that the casts' contracts have been renewed? Or are they still going to be on hold until the official annoucement?

It is good news that the show is being renewed but I see the scaling back to 13 episodes as proof that season four will see the end of the RTF's televised journey.

The show could continue via additional direct to video movies or even a theatrical release.

13 episodes isn't really too bad. Gives them more time and they can really pick the best scripts. It's standard on cable anyways. Shows with 20 episode seasons are pretty unusual there.

It just means a very long hiatus :s

If it only goes 13 more episodes, doesn't that pretty much demolish the idea of syndication? 4-hour mini, 13 Season One, 20 Season Two, 20 Season Three, 13 Season Four, 2-hour movie... that's 72 "hours" of TV, leaving us 28 "hours" short of the magic 100.

I'll take the thirteen episodes, and I'll always want more BSG.

They are trying to order more but with actors' contracts needing to be renewed, they ordered this many for now.
I've changed the title of this thread to reflect this.

Awsome news, koenigrules.

I'd like 13 eps better. They'd have more time for 13 scripts and ww wouldn't need to watch Black-Market-and-Sacrifice-like episodes.

Look at Season 1, 13 great episodes. But still great news.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! and NOOOOOOOO! again.

Ok for episodes and budget but they can't let us wait for 9 or 10 months. In Italy BSG is only on satellite TV and we have to wait a lot of time after the american airdate for dubbing, etc, and it may be possible that if you start watching the fourth season on january 2008 we could start on summer or september!!!
ALL THIS IS ABSURD!

I'm lucky because, for example, if in the US BSG is on suinday I start downloading the episode monday afternoon and I can start watching it one day later or less.

I'm glad to hear there will be a season 4, but to wait from March until January is wanton cruelty. I thought it was bad enough that they made us wait from March until October, which was 7 months. SciFi should really get their collective thumbs out of their asses and figure out what to do about BSG. It would be a shame if it didn't hit the magic 100 and get some syndication.

Well I always favour quality over quantity. Its all early days yet and the 13 may yet become 20 episodes.

Lets be grateful that BSG is continuing and keep a positive outlook.

Sure quality over quantity, but only problem is, in real life, actors age faster than the show.

If we wait real long time, then we will start to notice difference in actors.

How will writers work around that? Writers age slowly than actors do...that's one of my worry.

Actors is not going to wait for writers forever.

Anyone remember Angel?

I guess this could work. This is how many episodes the Season 1 started out after all. Also, the new Doctor Who has had only 13 episodes per season + 1 Christmas Episode.

But I'd still prefer twenty episodes - mainly because 13 episodes will spark a load of "This will be the last season" threads on the internet.

I'm not going to get too, too wrapped around the axle about 13 vs. 20. (I'd clean forgotten S1 was 13 eps long). It also is a bit soon to declare episode 413 to be it. I'd point out that only a little while ago, there were a lot of folks on this board that CROSSROADS Pt II was going to be the absolute, last ep.

Would I prefer a 20 ep. Season 4? Frak yes! The long cold wait from March/April (whenever BSG ends) until January will be annoying. But that there'll BE a Season 4 is enough to brighten my day.

And to those that brought up the passage of time on the actors, well I think there has been a substantial time passage in the show. The miniseries aired 5 years ago, but Battlestar Wiki has a timeline that guesstimates that somewhere close on 3 years have elapsed since the fall of the colonies. And that 2 extra years of aging on the actors could be chalked up to the hard living they've been doing.

I will only worry about the passage of time on the actors if they ever make a BSG movie with all the original cast members 20 years later like - Star Trek the Movie. hihi.gif
Here is an idea - Final Fantasy. With all the computer technology by then, I think they can have virtual characters by then. No worry.

That does put things in a different perspective. Never the less the step back to 13 episodes is not good. It can be made to to work. More times per script should (should!) eliminate the more bone headed errors that have popped up in the last two seasons.

One small suggestion. Fix the time line. Go back to stating how many days its been since the attack on the colonies at the start of every episodes; its presence forces discipline on the writers.

Well, if all this stuff is true we can start a "virtual 4th season" when we have seen the 3rd season and when the new season starts w'll see if the story is simile. I mean, we have to do something while we wait

I had a bad thought, away from my Cheerful Charlie-ness of my earlier post. RDM & Co are having trouble squeezing the show into the alloted 42 minutes as its is. If they have to go down from 20 to 13 eps, is that going to make S4 even more chock full of deleted and cut scenes?
